Zanzibar has long been known as the “Spice Island.” This 4-hour multi-sensory tour explores the island’s history in the spice trade. Experience the intoxicating aromas and scents of spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, nutmeg, chili pepper, vanilla, saffron, and curry. The island also grows pineapples, jackfruit, lemons, limes, oranges, pomelos, durians, and coconuts. This tour offers an off-the-beaten-path visit to see a side of Zanzibar that many travelers don’t get to see. Meet your local guide at your Stone Town hotel, then travel by air-conditioned minivan to a rural farming village. At a spice farm, learn the history of Zanzibar’s relationship with spices and the spice trade. Sample seasonal spices and a variety of fresh fruits – if the weather permits, you can even taste coconuts right off the tree! Then, meet a cassava farmer, who will demonstrate typical African farming techniques. Then, learn how to make a traditional sauce made from coconut milk and cassava leaves during a hands-on cooking lesson in the farmer’s outdoor kitchen. After the lesson, enjoy your sauce with a traditional Swahili lunch of spiced rice, bananas and local vegetables fresh from the farm. At the end of the tour, you will return to Stone Town.
